Experience in Reverse

Experience in Reverse

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” –Romans 8:1

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” –Romans 8:38-39

Romans 8 begins with the unbelievable pardon of God and ends with the unconquerable love of God. But our experience is in reverse of the chapter. It is the unconquerable, unquenchable love of God which pursues us, apprehends us and welcomes us. This love is expressed in and by the Son (1 John 4:9-10). This love is that which wins our pardon. This love expressed on the cross is the means by which we are no longer condemned. In fact, it may very well be that our experience of God’s love is in direct proportion to our understanding of God’s pardon. Else-wise it seems we are stuck in the battle of Romans 7. But, we have a Deliverer from the body of death. We have a Savior whose love is not overcome and whose pardon has no limit. We can walk as the children of God, eyes fixed on Jesus, hands and feet ready to serve the will of the Spirit. And when we stumble, we know the pardon is no less real or effective. No condemnation means no condemnation for time and eternity. This we can be assured of because of the love God has for us.

Romans 8 is such a powerful chapter to know in your head and more vitally still in your experience. How many of the sons and daughters of God cower in shame and guilt when they are not condemned? How often does circumstance or pain or opposition leave us feeling ‘unloved’ by God when in reality He is our “Abba” Father? Oh that you and I might grasp with our whole beings these profound life transforming Divine truths! Let me close with a practical challenge to that end: memorize Romans 8. I did the math and it is one verse a day, every day between Ash Wednesday (2/14/18) and Palm Sunday (3/25/18). As an added bonus, you’ve probably already got a few of these verses down (i.e.-8:1, 8:28). In the same time period, we will be hearing messages on Romans 8 (Free review/study time as you hear the text each Sunday!). I am going to try- won’t you join me?
